A life built around gratitude

The story behind the mission

Deb's journey didn't begin when she launched a nonprofit. It began long before, in a childhood shaped by Tampa roots, a career built on discipline and purpose, and a belief that everyday Americans have the power to make a difference.

Deep Florida roots

Her family's Tampa ties run generations deep. Her grandfather worked in Ybor City, and both of her parents graduated from Jefferson High School.

Her career

Her story

The moment that started it all

It was July 4, 2007. Deb Benson stood outside the gate at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa with her two young sons. She wanted to teach them something that day, not just about freedom in the abstract, but about the real people who protect it.

One by one, she encouraged her boys to walk up to the service members standing guard and simply say thank you. The reactions stopped her cold. These men and women, trained to be composed and unwavering, were visibly moved. Something so small, something so human, and yet it clearly meant the world.

Deb drove home that afternoon knowing she couldn't let that feeling end at the gate. She began researching the military challenge-coin tradition, where coins are exchanged as tokens of respect and shared service, and saw an opportunity: give everyday Americans a tangible way to honor the people who protect this country.

Later that year, she founded Grateful American Coin. What began as a lesson in gratitude for two boys has grown into a nationwide movement, and thousands of quiet, unforgettable moments where a service member was reminded their sacrifice was seen.

That is the power of a simple thank you.

About Deb

An everyday American. An extraordinary mission.

Deb Benson launched a nonprofit because she believed ordinary people are capable of extraordinary impact when they act with purpose.

Grateful American Coin grew alongside her professional life, not instead of it. That balance, holding a demanding corporate career while stewarding a national nonprofit mission, reflects exactly who Deb is: disciplined, purpose-driven, and committed to showing up fully in every role she holds.

Today, as the mission approaches 100,000 coins distributed and America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Deb's message has never been more timely. She believes gratitude should never remain unspoken, that service deserves to be seen, and that one coin, one conversation, one moment of recognition can stay with a veteran for a lifetime.
